PCC Rock Creek Library
Flexible, Student-Centered Spaces for Every Way of Learning
Client: Portland Community College
Location: Portland, Oregon
Date Completed: 2025
Market: Education
Overview: The newly renovated PCC Rock Creek Library now offers a dynamic and flexible environment designed to support a wide range of student needs. In response to evolving study habits and learning styles, the library features designated zones for quiet study, collaborative work, family-friendly use, and “hum zones” for quiet conversation.
Quiet study areas are anchored by high-back, acoustically supportive carrels paired with ergonomic task seating, creating focused workspaces that help reduce distraction. Throughout the library, a range of soft lounge seating and lightweight occasional tables support casual collaboration and quiet conversation, especially in the naturally lit perimeter spaces. Communal study zones feature large shared tables and simple, durable side chairs that maximize capacity while maintaining comfort for extended work sessions. Family-friendly and multipurpose areas include easily reconfigurable tables and seating, allowing students to adapt the space to their needs in the moment.
The Student Computing Center (SCC) was redesigned to improve efficiency and accessibility. New benching and technology-ready workstations provide clear, organized layouts for research and coursework, while supportive task seating ensures comfort for extended computer use.
